Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born October 20, 1964, she is the 49th Vice-President of the United States. Kamala Devi Harris is the first vice president to be female and the most powerful female official in U.S. history, as being the first African American and first Asian American vice president. She is a member of Congress and a former US senator who represents California. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After establishing her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was recruited to San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In the following years, she was the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. Harris was elected Attorney-General of California in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Martinez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator she advocated health reform, federal descholaring for cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens as well as the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also supported progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her provocative questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault.
